How Duner works
Duner helps you search and compare vacation rentals, things to do, and beach-gear companies in one place. Duner is not a booking site — when you find what you want, you book with the provider.
Search all the weeks you can travel
Most OBX vacation homes rent by the week, commonly with check-in on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday depending on the home. Don't know which week yet? That's the point. Choose every week your group could go — one or several, through 2028 — and Duner searches them together, showing which homes appear available for each. Once rates are published for a season, each week card shows how many homes match and the lowest displayed weekly price, so flexible dates can do some of the shopping for you — no repeating the same search week after week.
Beach gear is the one search that doesn't use weeks — you pick a town instead. Experiences use the same selected weeks to show activities for the dates you're considering.
Compare towns, homes, and weeks together
For homes: filter by town, beach and waterfront location (oceanfront, semi-oceanfront, soundfront, and more), check-in day, bedrooms, how many it sleeps, bathrooms, pool, hot tub, elevator, pet-friendly, linens, and a weekly budget cap — or start from the map and browse the coast town by town. Then sort by price and compare the weekly prices Duner has collected for the weeks you picked, clearly labeled so you know what each price includes.
Beach gear compares companies rather than prices — who delivers, who sets up on the sand, and which towns each one says it serves. Duner doesn't show gear prices; compare companies by service and coverage instead. Experiences compare activity prices across the marketplaces and providers we list.
Book with the provider
Every home result links straight to the listing on the rental company's own website. You book and pay them directly, under their terms, with their local team behind your stay. Duner never handles your booking, your payment, or your guest information.
Beach gear results link to the company's own site or phone number — book direct with them; Duner does not receive a commission when you book beach gear. Rental-home links earn Duner nothing either. Experiences are booked with the marketplace or provider shown on the result — those booking links are affiliate links, and Duner may earn a commission if you book after clicking one.
What the prices and labels mean
Rental companies advertise prices differently. Duner shows each price the way the company presents it and labels what it includes:
The displayed price is base rent; the rental company adds taxes and fees at checkout on its site, so the final total will be higher than the number shown.
The displayed price includes the taxes and standard fees the rental company builds in. Optional charges or add-ons may still apply.
One more label you'll meet while browsing without dates: "typically $X/wk" — the median of the weekly rates Duner has collected for that home and season. It's a planning reference, not a quote; pick your weeks in the search and the cards show the collected price or availability status for each selected week instead.
Always confirm the final price and terms with the rental company before booking — its website, booking system, or office is the source of truth.
Most OBX houses rent by the whole week, so that's what Duner searches. A few more labels tell you when there's more to the story:
The full week is available, and the company also advertises shorter stays during that period. If you only need 3–4 nights, this is your flag.
The full week isn't available, but some nights are. Duner can't price a partial split, so check the company's calendar for what's left.
The company takes bookings for that week by phone rather than online — their office can quote the rate directly.
Planning with a group
Most beach weeks are planned by committee — one person searches, four families weigh in, and the plan lives in forty-seven open tabs. Duner is built for exactly that:
One tap turns your search into a link — your weeks, filters, and starred homes. Text it to the group and everyone opens the same search, no explaining "go to the site and set the dates to…"
Star the homes worth a vote and they ride along in your link — the group opens your shortlist already starred. Tap the ★ counter and Duner filters the view to just your starred homes, so the conversation is just the finalists. Stars stay saved on your own device between visits.
Your starred homes open as a side-by-side comparison table — beds, baths, extras, and the collected price or availability status for each of your selected weeks — so the tradeoffs are on one screen. One more tap exports it as a CSV for the group's spreadsheet keeper.

See when your money goes further
If your dates are flexible, Duner's when-to-go chart shows how collected weekly rates rise and fall across the season — where the peak sits and where lower-priced shoulder-season weeks begin — for the year you're planning. Rates appear as rental companies publish each season, and the chart says plainly when Duner doesn't yet have enough rate data for that year.
Helpful extras
Duner also remembers your recent searches and starred homes on your device, flags price or availability changes to your starred homes since your last visit, suggests filters you can loosen when a search comes back empty, and — where a home's exact location is available — lets you open it in Google Maps.

How results are ordered
No one can pay for position on Duner. There is no paid placement, no promoted slot, and no sponsored result anywhere on the site — no provider, marketplace, or operator pays to rank higher or to be listed at all. Nothing in the code that orders results can even read a payment: there is no such field. If that ever changes we will say so here, and on the pages where those results appear, before it takes effect. Our Terms put the same commitment in writing.
One thing worth naming, since you can see it if you look at the page source: every affiliate link on Duner carries a "sponsored" marker in its HTML. That is the tag search engines ask for on any link that could earn the site money, and it is there for their benefit — it says "this link is compensated," not "this result was paid for a better position." No result on Duner is.
What does decide the order, per search:
Default order is price, low to high. With weeks selected the ranking number is each home's best rate across the weeks you picked; browsing without weeks, it's the typical (median) weekly rate for the season — in both cases the same number the card shows you, so the order can never contradict the price on screen. Because some companies publish base rent and others publish all-in totals, those two are ranked as separate groups with a labeled divider between them rather than mixed — an $883-plus-unknown-fees home is not "cheaper" than a $971 all-in one. Homes with no bookable price for your weeks sort last in both directions. You can also sort by bedrooms, sleeps, or distance to the ocean; exact ties break on the home's name, so the order is never left to the order our data happened to load in.
Default order is Top rated, which is a review-weighted rating rather than the raw star average — an activity with 4 reviews is pulled toward the middle until it has enough of them, so a lone five-star review can't outrank a 4.8 with 2,700. Ties break on review count. You can switch to price (either direction), most reviewed, or shortest first. On a price sort, activities priced per group, boat, or vehicle can't be ranked against per-person prices, so they sit below a labeled divider instead of being silently interleaved — unless you set a group size, in which case the ones a single booking covers for the whole group rank at the per-person figure their own card shows.
Companies are grouped best evidence first: those matching everything you selected, then the ones to confirm an item with, then options limited to qualifying communities, then companies covering part of your list, then the ones whose service area we couldn't confirm. Within a group they're listed A–Z — except the two "cover part of your selection" groups, which lead with whoever covers the most of your list. Duner shows no gear prices, so price is never part of this order, and nothing here is ranked by quality or popularity.
When the same activity is on both marketplaces, Duner shows one card, not two: the cheaper of the two listings that still matches your current search. Hide a marketplace, or filter in a way that rules the cheaper side out, and the other one steps in at its own price — without the lower-listed-price note, because its listed price wasn't the lower one. Three cases have no cheaper side, and all three show the Viator listing, which carries the richer data: an exact price tie; a pair quoted on different bases (per person versus per group); and a pair where one side publishes no price at all. The code that picks between the two reads the price and what the price covers, and nothing else — there is no commission figure anywhere in it to read.
Prices, ratings, and availability come from the provider and change; the provider's own booking page is the source of truth. Duner does not claim to list every provider or every available option.
Where home data comes from
Duner follows one rule: the rental company itself is the source of truth. Rental information comes from rental-company sources, including their own listings and data made available to Duner, and every home links back to its original listing. Duner shows when its availability information was last updated — always confirm the current availability, price, and terms directly with the rental company before booking.
